Packing Tips

  • Before you pack, ensure you have the correct packing boxes and materials to hand. You can purchase these online at Boxes & Packaging.
  • Wherever possible use smaller boxes, particularly for heavier items.
  • Use protective wrapping such as bubble wrap, tissue or corrugated card for delicate or fragile items such as TV’s, mirrors, paintings or crockery.
  • Use a permanent marker pen to label the contents of all boxes and use fragile stickers where required.
  • Be sure to drain and clean ALL kitchen appliances prior to storage and place a small wedge in the appliance door before storage.
  • Some softer items such as cushions and curtains may be placed loosely in plastic bags which will allow you to maximise the use of the storage space. You may wish to use moisture absorbers in any boxes or bags with soft furnishings, bed clothing, etc. It’s worthwhile to note that cardboard boxes are however more “breathable” than plastic bags.
  • Be sure to pack any items you may wish to retrieve from storage in one clearly marked box, ensuring you place this close to the front of your storage unit for ease of access. We recommend that you don’t pack items such as passports and other personal items you may require.
  • If you’re moving yourself you may wish to purchase or hire a sack trolley or appliance rollers to assist with heavier items.
  • Wherever possible, provide our staff with an inventory of goods to be stored. This will allow us to advise more accurately on the size and cost of storage required without any need to “upsize” on the day. This will also allow us to advise in advance of any goods which may be unsuitable for storage.
  • Check with your insurance company to ensure your goods are fully covered whilst in storage. If not, we can extend our liability to cover your goods whilst they are in storage. In this case please be sure to value your goods as accurately as possible. Full details of the cover provided are available from our depot staff.
  • Our staff will be happy to advise on the optimum method of packing your unit. As a general rule larger items should be placed into the unit first. Heavier and larger boxes should be stored first with lighter softer items on top. Be sure to use smaller, flexible or single items to fill gaps ensuring you maximise the use of the space. It may be an idea to place smaller items inside wardrobes, etc in order to maximise the use of the space.
  • Dust sheets are available to hire or purchase for protection of any items you may wish to stack.
  • Always take care to stack items safely and avoid lifting items which are too heavy. Please use trolleys and handling equipment provided in our depot. If you are unsure about the operation of any equipment please ask for advice.
  • Always take care when opening unit doors and ensure that items are not stacked in a way which may cause them to fall and cause injury or damage.
  • We always recommend that you secure your unit with a padlock which may be purchased online or at our depot.
